Many customers have added pergolas to their outdoor living space. Recently many customers have been asking what options are available to roof their pergolas to protect from the rain and sun but keep the open air feeling without a closed in roof like shingles.

There is an answer -- Polygal!

Polygal is a roofing material made from polycarbonate which provides the following benefits:

  • it provides rain protection
  • it reduces the sun's heat so you can enjoy your outdoor living space more
  • it provides UV protection which not only protects you but your structure as well so you will have to stain your structure less frequently and lower maintenance
  • plants can continue to grow underneath it
  • it is more attractive than corrugated roofing
  • it comes in various tints so you can best match your outdoor living space
  • it comes with a 10 year limited warranty

Ok you say, that's great but what does it cost? Budget $9 per square foot. Not bad when you factor in that it will increase the usage of your outdoor living space, you will not have to replace it every 2-3 years like the corrugated plastics which leak and get damaged during storms, you keep that open air feeling as opposed to putting on shingles which are equal...

Many people go to work or leave home for long hours. Well what happens to their pets? They leave them inside the house and they can get in trouble and destroy and or mess the house, the get kenneled (poor things) or they get left outside where they can run away. The answer -- build a small backyard dog run.

What about apartment owners? Tenants love their dogs and need a place to walk them and take them to the bathroom. Instead of having them go all over, dedicate an area for a dog run where the owners can take them off the leash and let them run care free with out fear of escaping and they get to mingle with other dogs as do the owners.

We have build recently economical dog runs that will keep the pets secure and not allow them to ...

As outdoor living continues to grow, we find ourselves designing spaces for our customers with a combination of features such as cedar pergolas, outdoor kitchens and/or outdoor fireplace. Let me walk you through one example.

An apartment complex had the need to provide its tenants with an outdoor kitchen, fireplace, pergola cover and general outdoor meeting place. They wanted it to match the existing brick buildings in place. After the meeting, here are pictures of the general concepts we created for them.

Many times we get customers who move into their house and they want more outdoor living space or patio space than they currently have. Or they have a spot that is difficult to maintain, the grass doesn't grow and its messy. They have called concrete companies and adding additional concrete patio is expensive. So what to do? Add a flagstone patio expansion the existing concrete patio.

Adding a flagstone patio can be a cost effective way to increase your outdoor living space and add character.

Let me illustrate. In the picture below the customer had a difficult space to maintain and they wanted more seating and outdoor living space.

A shade structure is highly desired in creating an outdoor living space. So lately I've been asked What's a pergola? What's a pavilion? What's the difference between the two? Which is better for my outdoor living space?

Let me explain.

A pergola is a structure that provides filtered shade. Although it can be attached to a house, it is generally free standing with four cedar or wood posts to which multiple layers of headers and rafters are attached to create the shade. Pergola's are used to create visual appeal in the outdoor living area and a comfortable sitting environment that maintains the open, airy feeling while providing some filtered shade protection from the sun. Pergolas are often found by a pool side. However, pergolas do no...

We get this question frequently - "When should I replaster my pool?" Here are some things to consider to help answer the question.

1) Anytime. If your tired of the look, just moved in to the house and the pool is dated or to create the ultimate outdoor living space, then replaster your pool anytime!

2) The pool plaster does not feel the same. Your plaster should have a smooth, continous feeling. If you feel holes, pits, and/or it does not feel smooth anymore, then this could be the time to replaster. Overtime with water chemistry and acid washing you can create pits in the plaster which feel rough on the skin. If pervasive, time to replaster!

3) Got stains on the plaster and can't get them out? Time to replaster?

4) To maintain the poo...
